# Consent-based class observation

> Monitor live classes with advance consent: admins see shared content, while each person's camera and microphone stay consent-gated.

Admins can observe live classes hidden. Shared content is visible, while each person's camera and microphone require advance consent enforced by the media server.

### Consent for each person

Teachers set their own consent. Student consent comes from the student or a parent and is recorded before observation.

### Media server enforcement

An observer receives a person's camera and microphone only when consent is confirmed. Without confirmation, those streams are not delivered.

### Live shared content

Admins can follow the whiteboard, Quran viewer, PDF books and screen share during a live class. Halqora does not record classes.

To monitor online tutoring sessions, an academy admin can observe a live lesson for quality and safeguarding. In Halqora, a hidden observer always sees shared content; each person's camera and microphone require advance consent from that person, or a parent for a student, enforced by the media server.

Halqora is our product. We've tried to keep this comparison fair: competitor details come from their public pages, linked and dated below. Tell us if anything is out of date at support@halqora.com.

## What is consent-based class observation?

> **Definition:** Consent-based class observation means an admin can follow a live lesson while access to each person's camera and microphone depends on permission recorded in advance.

Halqora is management software for online academies. Observation works within its one-to-one classroom. A teacher's consent does not grant access to the student's camera or microphone, or the reverse.

Shared content follows a different rule. The observer always sees the whiteboard, Quran viewer, PDF books and screen share. Explain that distinction before asking for consent. The Quran text and page fonts are credited to Quran Foundation (Quran.com).

## How it works

1. Teachers set observation consent in their own profile. For a student, consent comes from the student or a parent and is recorded in advance.
2. Halqora records the consent date and who gave consent.
3. An admin joins the live class hidden. Families do not have observer access.
4. The observer follows shared content: the whiteboard, Quran viewer, PDF books and screen share.
5. Camera and microphone access depends on each participant's consent. The participant's client sets track subscription permissions before publishing; the media server enforces those permissions.
6. If consent cannot be confirmed, the restricted stream is not delivered. The rule fails closed rather than assuming permission.
7. Join and leave events are logged. There is no attendance report screen yet.

Consent changes apply from the participant's next join, rather than instantly during an existing connection. An observer can see metadata showing that a camera or microphone track exists without receiving its content.

## Why consent first: what UK safeguarding guidance asks for

England's Department for Education guidance for tuition providers, checked 21 October 2026, asks providers to reflect online safety in their child protection policy. The guidance names content, contact, conduct and commercialisation as risk areas. Give observation a clear purpose and a response when concerns arise.

The [NSPCC's advice for tutors](https://learning.nspcc.org.uk/safeguarding-child-protection/tutors), checked 21 October 2026, recommends another adult within earshot and/or giving parents the option of sitting in. The advice also says to avoid working from a bedroom. Admin observation should not be presented as a substitute for those arrangements.

The [NSPCC's photography and filming guidance](https://learning.nspcc.org.uk/online-safety/photographing-filming-children), checked 21 October 2026, calls for parental consent before photographing or filming young people under 16 and says consent can be withdrawn. That guidance concerns images and filming; Halqora does not record lessons. Keep [recording online lessons and consent](https://halqora.com/blog/recording-online-lessons-consent) separate from your live observation policy.

Competitor entries reflect vendor descriptions as of 21 October 2026: Pencil Spaces' updates, Lessonspace's API documentation, LearnCube's classroom entry guide and QuranSuite's features. “Not stated on checked page” does not establish that a feature is absent.

## Collecting and recording consent

Consent collection should explain who can observe, why an admin may observe and what remains visible without camera or microphone permission. Avoid a broad question such as “May we monitor lessons?” Describe shared content and personal streams separately so families and teachers understand the choice.

Ask teachers to make their own choice in their profile. Record student consent before observation, including who agreed and when. If someone withdraws consent, account for the next-join behavior when arranging further observations. Our guide to [how to observe online classes with consent](https://halqora.com/blog/observe-online-classes-with-consent) covers the practical conversation.

## What it doesn't do (yet)

> **What it doesn't do (yet):** Halqora does not record classes, so no lesson video is available afterward. Halqora does not provide AI monitoring, parent listen-in or mobile apps. Families have no accounts; observation is an admin role.

Observation does not automatically decide whether a class happened. Teachers record class outcomes, and admins resolve other cases.

## Alternatives and how others handle this

As of 21 October 2026, Pencil Spaces describes discreet observation. Lessonspace documents an invisible, spectator-only ghost flag without the observer's camera or microphone. Lessonspace may suit a team building classroom access through an API. Management tools using these classrooms may offer observer access too.

QuranSuite says permitted parents can listen in, making it a better fit when parent listen-in is required. QuranSuite also says AI watches calls and monitoring can be switched on or off. LearnCube describes admins entering upcoming classes through “Enter Class.”

Across Pencil Spaces, Lessonspace, LearnCube and QuranSuite sources, we could not find per-person advance consent enforced by the media server on their public pages as of 21 October 2026. Halqora's distinction is that specific permission boundary. For academy policy context, see [safeguarding in online tutoring](https://halqora.com/blog/safeguarding-online-tutoring).

## Questions

### Can an academy monitor online tutoring sessions without the teacher knowing?

Halqora lets an admin join a live class hidden, as do observer modes described by Pencil Spaces and Lessonspace. A hidden presence does not mean permission to receive every stream. Teachers set their own camera and microphone consent in their profile before observation. Shared classroom content remains visible to the observer regardless of that consent.

### What happens if a student's parent hasn't given consent?

If no valid student observation consent is on file, the observer does not receive that student's camera or microphone. Shared content, including the whiteboard, Quran viewer, PDF pages and screen share, remains visible. The media server enforces the camera and microphone restriction. If consent cannot be confirmed, those streams are not delivered. Consent changes apply from the participant's next join.

### Is observation the same as recording?

No. Halqora observation happens live, and Halqora does not record classes or create a video file for later review. Join and leave events are logged, so no recording does not mean no data is stored. Recording would require separate decisions about purpose, consent, access and storage. A live observation also does not replace your other safeguarding arrangements.

### Does this make an academy compliant with safeguarding rules?

No. Consent-based observation supports quality checks and safeguarding, but software cannot establish compliance by itself. England's Department for Education guidance asks tuition providers to reflect online safety in their child protection policy. Your academy still needs appropriate policies, staff preparation and a response to concerns. This is general information, not legal or tax advice; check with an adviser in your country.
